Celebrating International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

IMG 4009 580px

Today is International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. It’s a day dedicated to the celebration of an estimated 370 million First Nation’s peoples who live in about 90 countries around the world.

Established in 1994 by the United Nations General Assembly to mark the first meeting of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations, the day celebrates the work done by the group, on the promotion and protection of Human Rights.

annecto will celebrate International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples by co-hosting a special community lunch at the Redfern Community Centre in Sydney on the eve of this special annual occasion. Along with members of our partner organisations the City of Sydney, the Welcome Dinner Project and Joining The Dots, annecto care recipients from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and those from other First Nation’s backgrounds, will be attending the community lunch.

The Lunch will feature cultural performances as well as encouraging conversation and interaction around each table.

This event comes just a month on from the launch of our very first Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) during NAIDOC Week.   Our RAP not only acknowledges and respects the cultural and historical heritage of Australia’s First Peoples. It also aims to raise awareness and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural protocols, ensure annecto works toward creating a culturally safe environment for staff, care recipients and stakeholders and to create opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is an opportunity to reach out and ask how you might connect with your local Aboriginal community and their events in some small way. It can also be an opportunity for your staff and clients from various First Peoples backgrounds to get together, connect, share their experiences and find some common ground.   While the First Peoples of the world make up less than 5 per cent of the world's population, they account for 15 per cent of the poorest.   They speak an overwhelming majority of the world's estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures We are all privileged to live in a beautiful country that is home to the world’s oldest living culture-Aboriginal culture.

We hope today, Wednesday 9 August, International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, you join in celebrating our deep and rich history and committing to the inclusion of and healing for all Australians.
