International Day of People with Disability

Celebrating people of all abilities

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is a United Nations sanctioned day that is celebrated internationally each year on 3 December. It aims to increase public awareness, understanding and engagement of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions.

Throughout the first two weeks of December, IDPwD events are held all over the country. annecto have traditionally participated in IDPwD events, and this year we have two locations joining in the celebrations.

Mildura

Mildura Rural City Council have organised an information day open to the public in the Mildura City Mall on Friday 2 December from 11.00am – 2.00pm. annecto have an information stall at the event and staff will be talking to the members of the interested public. The event has a number of free medical testing such as hearing tests, important local health information, Christmas craft stalls and fun activities for the family and kids.

Speakers Bank

Wyndham City Council have organised a series of events for local residents. Speakers Bank speaker, Storm Robbins will be giving a free motivational talk at the Penrose Promenade Community Centre in Tarneit on Thursday 8 December, to celebrate IDPwD. The event runs from 12.30 – 1.30pm and includes lunch. RSVP to Adam Williams on adam.williams@wyndham.vic.gov.au to secure your spot at this event.

Here are a few interesting events being held across Melbourne for IDPwD:

Wheelchair Basketball for anyone who is interested in giving it a go, or who are keen to watch how it’s done. Wednesday 7 December 2016 from 1 – 2pm at Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre, 5 Sargood Street, Altona.

BLEMISH is a creative development performance and forum on Friday 9 December 2016 from 6 – 7.30 pm.It will be held at The Space, Coburg High School, Gate 1, 101 Urquhart Street, Coburg.

Wrenn’s Story Time is for kids of all abilities. Wrenn the guide dog will be present with owner Gerry at Newport Community Hub on Friday 9 December 2016 from 9.30 – 11.30am, 13 Mason Street, Newport.

Sensory Garden in Werribee is having an open day to all on 3 December at Mambourin Sensory Gardens, 2 Recreation Close, Werribee from 10am – 1pm. Coffee and cake provided.

KarnivART features distinguished artwork by artists with a disability or history of mental illness living in Victoria. Open on 2 December from 5.30pm – 7.30pm for a special awards ceremony to announce the winner of the first KarnivART Wyndham Exhibition at the Saltwater Community Centre.
