At the 2016 IASSIDD Conference we presented research that considered our work at an individual, organisational, community and population level.

Community Development

What needs to happen to ensure all new communities plan for the future taking into account economic, cultural and civic foundations? We need resilient communities with social and economic opportunities available for everyone.

annecto’s research shows that communities with higher levels of employment and more community based organisations per person reflect higher levels of feeling included within the society they live.

Sydney ranked in the top 10 liveable cities in the world this year, and Melbourne within the top 15. Yet the judging criteria for this annual international citizen and community resilience survey did not measure how resilient the citizens of these cities are, whether they have social and economic opportunities available to them, or in fact if they have valued roles of any kind.

Conclusion:

How can we provide more opportunities for people to participate socially and economically?

Why aren’t we demanding that all new planned communities address the issue of inclusion from the early stages of planning?

annecto’s research shows that communities with higher levels of employment and more community based organisations per person reflect higher levels of feeling included within the society they live.

A new approach to building communities is needed, so that within the very structure of an emerging community, opportunities exist for everyone.

“Recognising that disability is an evolving concept and that disability results from the interaction between persons with impairments and  attitudinal and environmental barriers that hinders their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.” - UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
