NDIS Rally

The sun was shining and positive energy abounded as Federation Square became a sea of red at the Every Australian Counts - Make it Real Rally  last Monday.

The annecto stand, positioned at the St Kilda Road entrance to Federation Square, saw many passerby’s stop to ask the question, “What is this all about and where do I sign up?”

The 4,000 strong  rally  gathered to raise awareness of the rights of people with disability and the unfairness of a system that discriminates against assisting those people who did not acquire their disability from transport accidents or while at work.

annecto staff were kept busy at the annecto display stand during the rally, with over 12 messages recorded  to be uploaded to the Every Australian Counts website. Over ten annecto and DCV tweets appeared on the super-sized screen over the stage during the speeches.

Federal Shadow Minister for Disabilities, Carers and the Voluntary Sector Senator Mitch Fifield, Attorney General Nicola Roxon, Victorian Community Services Minister Mary Wooldridge and Federal Disability Discrimination Commissioner Graeme Innes joined the speaker's list for the Melbourne rally.   The event was MC’d by comedian, writer, editor of the ABC’s Ramp Up website and disability activist Stella Young.

The media picked up all the rally demonstrations at each capital city and the event was discussed on major radio stations.

New Garden Sprouts Community Spirit

annecto David House in Yarraville has been awarded $10,000 as part of the Westpac Community Grant program.   A gathering at annecto David House in Yarraville took place to celebrate and launch the new community project and accept the donation.

Focusing on social inclusion, the grants program, which donates to community organisations across Australia, chose a project proposed by the community hub to bring people together.

annecto CEO Estelle Fyffe says the donation will go a long way in establishing a community project at the Yarraville site.

“Thanks to the Westpac Community Grant we will be able to develop a sensory garden including a vegetable garden. This garden will encompass elements of colour, sound, texture and smell. The people we support and local members of the community will be able to design and develop the garden and then be responsible for the maintenance.  The design will take into account the different seasons and all that brings in terms of colour, texture and taste.”

The main goal of developing a sensory garden is to provide an ongoing project for people at the Community Hub. The garden project is an opportunity to be involved in the design, development, and maintenance of a beautiful space. It is planned local neighbours will become involved by working alongside members of the annecto community.

annecto community members can take part in either an active or passive physical activity and be able to experiment with a range of sensory experiences, be it eating different foods, making sounds using natural materials and playing with colours and textures.

Following the launch, through to November 2012, volunteering work, educational support and further community based fundraising for the nominated organisation will take place through regional Westpac team events.  It is envisaged a further $10,000 will be donated to the annecto project from the community based fundraising.

The garden space is in an area that all participants and visitors will engage with as it is along the main walkway to the community hub.
